Labuan Bajo: the harbour, the airport and how the transfers work

Labuan Bajo is a working port town at the western tip of Flores, and it exists for travellers in roughly the proportion that it exists for fishing boats. The waterfront is where the speedboats and the wooden boats tie up, and it is the line in every listing on this site that says “Labuan Bajo”. Fourteen of the sixteen trips we list begin there.

The other two, $926 and $1,306, are sold starting from Bali. That is not a small detail dressed up as one. It changes where your first day begins, what the fare is covering and how you get to Flores in the first place, so it is worth reading twice on the listing page before you commit.

Distances inside the town itself are short. Labuan Bajo is small, the accommodation clusters along and above the waterfront, and the walk from most of it to the boats is measured in minutes rather than kilometres. That is the one genuine convenience of the place: you are not crossing a city at four in the morning to reach a pier.

What the harbour cannot do is rescue a late arrival. A boat that leaves before sunrise leaves before sunrise, and the ten or eleven hours behind that departure are built on it. Arrive the night before.

The rule that saves the most trips is the dull one: land in Labuan Bajo the day before your boat. Departures are early, they are the early departures for good reasons — calmer sea, faster crossing, animals moving in the cool — and a flight that slips by three hours cannot be absorbed by a ten-hour schedule.

The evening before is also the evening to sort three things. Your pickup or your walk to the waterfront, so you are not solving it at dawn. Cash for the park and ranger charges, which on most of what we list are paid separately from the fare and collected on the day. And a dry bag, because whichever listing you have booked, the boat is open and the crossing is wet in a fresh breeze.

On the fees: the one listing here that removes that errand is $135, whose own title says all fees are included. It is eleven hours, the longest single day on the site, and carries 66 reviews at 4.5. Everything else we list leaves the charges to be settled at the park.

Book it as that and it is good value; book it expecting dragons and you will be disappointed.

$160 is the other short option, a three-hour private charter from the harbour rated 4.5 across 68 reviews. It is an evening on the water rather than a park day, and it is the only booking here that fits neatly around an afternoon arrival.

Inland, $138 goes the other way entirely: two days to Waerebo village and the rice fields up in the hills, 163 reviews at 4.7. It has nothing to do with the islands and is the strongest-rated of the two-day listings we carry, which tells you something about what people make of it.
