Pink Beach: which day tour Komodo boats actually stop there, and how long you get

The colour is real and it is not a filter, but it is also not the fuchsia of a postcard. What people see is a pale rose that comes and goes with the light: strong at the waterline where the wet sand is darker, softer up the beach, strongest of all in the first and last hours of daylight. The usual explanation is fragments of red coral, broken down over a long time and mixed through white sand, and you can watch the effect appear and vanish as you walk a few metres along the shore.

That has a practical consequence for anyone choosing a boat. Midday is the worst light for the thing you came to photograph, and midday is exactly when most day boats arrive, because the morning goes to the ridge and the dragons. If the colour is the point of the trip for you, a boat that sleeps out there is a better instrument than any day tour Komodo agencies can sell you, because it can be at the beach early or late.

The other thing to know is that the beach is small, and the water in front of it is the better half of the stop. The reef starts a short swim out, the drop is gentle, and the fish are close enough that snorkeling here works for people who are not confident swimmers. Most crews hand out masks and fins as the anchor goes down, and most people spend more of the hour in the water than on the sand.

Two practical cautions, both boring and both true. There is no shade worth the name and nothing to buy, so water and a hat come from the boat. And the sand is protected ground inside the park: taking it home is the one souvenir that is not on offer.

The park is big and a day is short. A boat leaving Labuan Bajo at dawn has to fit a crossing, the ridge on Padar, a ranger walk with the dragons, at least one snorkeling stop and the crossing home, and it has to be alongside before dark. Something gets left out, and on a good number of itineraries the thing left out is this beach.

Listings that name it. $87 says relax at Pink Beach. $93 says snorkeling at Pink Beach, Manta Point and Siaba Island. $87 says unwind at Pink Beach. Listings that do not name it. Several excellent days on this site are built around the dragons and the manta rays and say nothing about Pink Beach. That does not always mean the boat sails past — crews adjust to wind and tide, and a stop can be added or dropped on the morning. It means you should not assume it. Ask the operator before you pay if the beach matters to you.

What a private boat changes. $1,306 and $1,550 both put Padar, Pink Beach and the dragons in the description, and being private is what lets the beach stop happen at the hour you want rather than the hour the fleet imposes. For a party of four or more, the per-person arithmetic on a private boat is not what the headline price suggests.

What a day tour Komodo crews run cannot do. It cannot give you the beach to yourself in August at noon, and no listing claims otherwise. If that is what you are after, the answer is a night on board rather than a different day boat.
