A trip to Komodo: how long, how much, and from where

The islands sit between Flores and Sumbawa, in eastern Indonesia, and the town you use is Labuan Bajo. It has an airport, a pier and a single road along the water with the boat offices on it. Everything in the park — the dragons, the ridge on Padar, the pink sand, the manta water — is a boat ride from that pier.

Getting there. Labuan Bajo is reached by air, most often from Bali, and the flight is the part people underestimate: it is a separate booking from the boat and it sets the hour your trip to Komodo really begins. Boats leave early. A flight that lands in the afternoon costs you the following morning, not the same one.

The distances. Rinca is the nearer dragon island and Komodo the further one, which is why some listings name one and some the other. Padar sits between them. A fast hull turns that geography into an eight-hour day; a slower one turns it into eleven, or into a night at anchor. That single difference explains most of the fare spread you see on this site.

What is not the park. Two things near the town get mixed into a trip to Komodo by mistake. $45 is a half day at Rangko Cave and Boleng Beach, close to Labuan Bajo and not in the park at all. $138 goes inland to Wae Rebo village and the rice fields, two days on land. Both are good; neither is the dragons.

Four numbers make up the bill, and only one of them is the one people compare.

The boat. $87 is the floor for a full day on the water and $135 the ceiling among the day listings. Between them sit $93, $99, $87 and our pick $102. That is a spread of about fifty dollars across six boats, which is less than most people expect.

The park entrance. Paid separately, at rates the park authority sets and changes; we do not print an amount here because the listings do not publish one. $135 is the single listing on this site that says in its own title that the fees are included, which is worth knowing before you compare it to the cheaper boats.

The bed. Nights in Labuan Bajo are your own arrangement and we do not sell them, so no number from us. The boats with cabins fold that cost into the fare: $180 for a night on board, $288 or $300 for two, $335 for the sailing version at 4.7 across 83 reviews.

The flight. Separate again, and the one worth booking first, because it sets which morning you can be at the pier. Everything else on this page can be moved around it, and free cancellation on the tours means the boat can wait for the flight to be certain.

Sixteen listings, three shapes. Almost every question people ask us is really a question about which of these three they want.

One long day. Out at dawn, back in the evening, the dragons, Padar, Pink Beach and a snorkelling stop in between. Six listings do this and they are within about fifty dollars of each other. $87 carries 1,865 ratings at 4.7; $99 and $93 both hold 4.8; $87 runs the same round at an unhurried pace.

Nights on the water. The same islands with the racing taken out and a sunrise added. $180 is one night and 470 reviews; $288 and $300 are two nights; $335 is the sailing version. Cabins are shared unless you have booked a private hull.

Your own boat. $926 is two days with the boat to yourselves, $1,306 adds a hotel night, and $1,550 is four days at 4.7 across 31 reviews. Two of the three are listed with Bali as the meeting point because the transfer is arranged from there; the sailing still happens out of Labuan Bajo.

And around all of that sit the three that are not the park at all: $45 near the town, $138 inland, and $160, a three-hour private charter that goes to Flying Fox Island at sunset and, as the listing says plainly, nowhere else.
