Padar Island viewpoint: the three bays, the climb, and what time the boats get there

Padar is a dry, steep island in the middle of Komodo National Park, between Komodo Island and Rinca. The ridge that runs down its northern end has water on both sides, and the sea has cut three deep bays into it at slightly different angles. Stand at the right point on the ridge and all three are below you at once, each with its own beach: one pale, one darker, one that reads pink in the right light. That single geometry is the whole reason the island is on almost every itinerary out of Labuan Bajo.

The climb is short and it is honest work. A staircase has been built into the lower slope from the landing, and it does the first part of the job for you. Above that the path narrows to dirt, loose stone and a few rocky steps along the spine of the ridge. There is no shade anywhere on it. Most people reach the classic Padar Island viewpoint in twenty to thirty minutes at an easy pace, and the platform is not the end of the trail — the ridge goes on rising behind it, and fewer people carry on.

The island is green for a few months after the rains and brown for the rest of the year, and both versions photograph well for different reasons. What does not change is the heat. There is no water on the island, no shade on the path and nothing to buy at the top. Take more water than you think you need, wear something on your feet with grip, and treat the middle of the day as the hour to be swimming somewhere else.

One thing worth saying plainly, because listings do not always spell it out: the dragons are not here. Padar is a walk and a view. The ranger walks are on Komodo Island and on Rinca, and most boats that take you to the Padar Island viewpoint call at one of those two in the same day, which is why the days run to ten hours or more.

Two people can book two listings that look identical and come home with different memories of the same hill. The variable is the clock, and it is the one thing a booking page decides for you long before you stand on the Padar Island viewpoint.

On a day run. Boats leave Labuan Bajo at or before dawn and Padar is usually the first or second stop, which puts you on the ridge somewhere between seven and nine in the morning. You will not be alone: the whole day fleet is working to the same timetable, and in July and August there is a line of people on the narrow part of the path.

This is the version people describe when they say the Padar Island viewpoint was the best hour of the trip, and it is the single strongest argument for spending a night on a boat.

On a private boat. $926, $1,306 and $1,550 set their own order of stops. You are buying the timetable rather than the destination: nobody else decides when the anchor comes up, and for a party of four or six the price per head stops looking the way it looks on the listing page.

In the afternoon. Some boats take the ridge late on the way back, when the fleet has gone and the light is long. It is hotter on the climb and the bays face into the sun differently, so it is a trade rather than a downgrade.
